Situation
The market is currently stable. A new port fee for Chinese-owned, -operated or -built ships is set to take effect on 14 October. While the exact details are not yet clear, some operators and carriers are planning to change flags.
Obstacles
According to shipping lines, the new port fees will have little to no effect on rates or services.
While European shipping lines have rotated most, if not all, of their China-built container ships out of US services, some Chinese carriers stated in an initial announcement that they will neither adjust their services nor introduce additional charges. We will be monitoring these developments closely in the coming weeks.
Outlook
The current outlook suggests that the market will remain stable until the end of the year.
